The Dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major

About this day

This day recalls the dedication of Saint Mary Major in Rome. Our Lady marked its site on the Esquiline Hill with a snowfall in August, hence her title Our Lady of the Snows; Pope Sixtus III rebuilt it after the Council of Ephesus proclaimed her Mother of God.
