About this day
Joseph Calasanz was a Spanish priest who, moved by the neglect of poor children in Rome, opened free schools for them. His teachers became the Clerks Regular of the Pious Schools, the Piarists, recognized as a religious order in 1621. He died in Rome in 1648.
