About this day
Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish Conventual Franciscan priest. A prisoner at Auschwitz, he volunteered to die in place of Francis Gajowniczek, a husband and father condemned to starvation, and was killed there on August 14, 1941. He was canonized in 1982.
