About this day
Forty days after his birth, Mary and Joseph presented Jesus in the Temple, where the aged Simeon and the prophetess Anna recognized him as the Messiah. Simeon hailed him as a light for the Gentiles, and candles are blessed this day, hence the name Candlemas.
