About this day
Fabian, a layman, was chosen Bishop of Rome in 236 when, as Eusebius records, a dove settled on his head. He organized the clergy of Rome into districts to serve the poor, cared for the catacomb cemeteries, and was martyred in 250 in the persecution of Decius.
