About this day
Giovanni Battista Montini was elected pope in 1963 and took the name Paul VI. He guided the Second Vatican Council to its close and wrote the encyclical Humanae Vitae. Canonized in 2018, he is remembered on May 29, the anniversary of his priestly ordination in 1920.
