About this day
George, a soldier in the Roman army, was martyred at Lydda in Palestine under the Emperor Diocletian, about 304, and is honored by the Eastern Church as a great martyr. He is patron of England and one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, pictured slaying a dragon.
