About this day
This memorial honors the holy name of Jesus, which means “God saves” (Matthew 1:21). Promoted by Saint Bernardine of Siena and the Franciscans, the feast was extended to the whole Church by Pope Innocent XIII in 1721; the Roman Missal of 2002 restored it on January 3.
